Placement Guide

✦

This questionnaire reflects what you can currently do with a birth chart β€” not what you've heard of, or what sounds familiar, but what you could sit down and demonstrate right now.

Score each statement honestly. The result will suggest the room where your demonstrated skills are solid, so you start somewhere with real traction.

Proficiency Indicators
I can do this confidently β€” You could explain or demonstrate it to someone else without looking anything up.
I can do this with support β€” You understand the concept but would need a reference, a refresher, or guidance to apply it.
I'm not there yet β€” This is unfamiliar, or you've encountered it but couldn't reliably use it on your own.
01
Part One
Awareness

These are the building blocks. Everything else depends on them. If you're weighing between two options, always scale down rather than up.

1.I can look at a birth chart and identify the rising sign, the house each planet occupies, and the sign on the cusp of each house.
2.I can name all twelve zodiac signs, their elements (fire, earth, air, water), and their modalities (cardinal, fixed, mutable) from memory.
3.I can explain what each of the planets represents beyond keywords. I know the core energy function of the Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto.
4.I can describe what it means when a planet is in domicile, exaltation, detriment, or fall, and identify at least one of each in my own chart.
5.I understand the difference between natal planets and transiting planets, and I can explain why birth time accuracy matters for the rising sign and houses.

Part Two
Activation

These statements test whether you can read how the pieces relate to each other within their systems.

6.I can identify the four angles in my chart (ASC, DSC, MC, IC), name which planets sit on or near them, and explain why angular planets carry more weight.
7.I can identify the ruling planet of all 12 signs and trace its placement in my chart to explain how it influences those areas of life.
8.I can identify what dignities each of my natal placements lands in and notice whether any of them are in mutual reception or rejection.
9.I can identify the major aspects in my chart (conjunctions, oppositions, squares, trines, sextiles) and describe the dynamic each one creates between the planets, signs, and houses involved.
10.I understand what the lunar nodes represent, locate them in my chart, and describe the purposeful direction and comfort zones they create.
11.I can identify the fixed placements in my chart and explain their influence, based on sign, house, and aspects.
12.I understand the eight lunar phases, can identify which phase the Moon was in when I was born, and can outline which months of the year always carry each sign's new and full moons.

Part Three
Timing

These statements test whether you can work with a dynamic chart as a map that activates across time, rather than a static snapshot.

13.I can identify the dates of my current profection year, the house it activates, the sign on its cusp, the year lord, and describe what themes this year is bringing into focus.
14.I know how a solar return chart is calculated and can read it by identifying the year's ascendant and key influences, and use it alongside my natal chart to preview the conditions of the year ahead.
15.I know the speed of each major planet's revolution around the zodiac in relation to one another as the approximate time spent in each sign.
16.I understand what a planetary return is, can explain what these major cycles signify per planet, and find when my returns occur.
17.I can see a personal throughline in the layering of my natal chart, profection year, and solar return charts.

Part Four
Synthesis

These statements test whether you can weave placements, systems, and timing into a single coherent read and feel the narrative it builds.

18.I can read an unfamiliar natal chart with clarity and explain the narrative it outlines.
19.I can identify any natal retrograde planets and describe how their expression differs from direct planets as an internalized operating style.
20.I can use derivative house techniques to read a specific life area's influence on another.
21.I can identify convergence, name those themes, and tie it into the bigger story arc.
22.I can synthesize a chart into a single core narrative β€” not a list of observations β€” by finding the dominant through-line, connecting the supporting placements, identifying what is currently active, and leaving the person with something they can actually use.
23.I can sit with ambiguity in a chart, hold contradictory placements without forcing resolution, and trust that the narrative will clarify through continued observation rather than needing to land on a fixed interpretation immediately.
